Cleaning Tile Grout Correctly
By Steve Williams,
Tile is an excellent long-lasting flooring option for your home. Properly cleaning tile grout will prolong its life and help keep your tile looking new. Of course, there are some precautions to be aware of to avoid damaging your tile and grout in the process. Cleaners made from items you already have in your home are the most efficient.
-
Mop the floor or wipe down wall tiles with hot water and a towel.
-
Next, create a grout cleaner. You can create an effective grout cleaner out of products you likely already have sitting around the house — Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of dish soap.
-
Spoon this mixture into the grout and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
-
Scrub the grout with a small brush, such as an old toothbrush. Make sure you don’t apply too much pressure to the brush, so it doesn’t start lifting the grout out of place.
-
Wipe away the cleaning solution with a damp rag, then give the floor another mopping.
Repeat the process if there are stains that persist. If you still experience some staining, try using an oxygen bleach product like OxiClean. Do not use anything containing ammonia bleach as it will destroy the grout and possibly the tile. So, avoid bleach, ammonia, vinegar or acid-based cleaners on grout.
Magic erasers are another option, but it takes a little more elbow grease. Cut a standard magic eraser in two. Make sure to wet the magic eraser and ring it out until it is a little more than damp. Then scrub the grout line as you gently squeeze. You will probably go thru quite a bit of magic erasers when cleaning floor grout.
