What is a good quality carpet?
By Michelle Sierra,
Carpet can be complex to shop for because it is challenging for the average consumer to tell the quality just by seeing it. Numerous attributes contribute to the overall quality of the carpet. You need to consider every aspect of the carpet to determine the quality reliably. Here is a list of those factors:
Face Weight –
Face weight is the density of the carpet pile per square yard of carpet, measured in ounces. Regrettably, many consumers believe that face weight is the best way to determine a carpet's durability. On the contrary, this is not always the case. The items listed below have a huge play in this as well.
Fiber Twist –
The fiber's twist one of the best indicators of carpet quality. Fiber twist is the number of times they twist the strands of fiber together. It is measured to within a one-inch length of the fiber. They call the result a carpet's twist number or turns-per-inch (TPI). Higher twist numbers mean the carpet will perform better in the long term.
Type of Fiber –
The type of fiber of the carpet is significant in a good quality carpet. Different fibers have various characteristics, and some fiber types work better than others in different situations. Common synthetic carpet fibers include nylon, olefin, polyester and triexta. Natural carpet fibers like wool and sisal are not used as much but still play a role in the carpet industry.
Carpet Density –
Carpet density indicates how close together the fibers are stitched or tufted into the carpet backing. A higher density value indicates a more durable carpet when all the above factors are equivalent.
Manufacturer Warranty –
Carpet wear warranties are the most common type of warranty and cover carpet fiber deterioration. Other terms you might see are "texture retention," "abrasive wear" and "exclusions." It can be challenging to understand what the manufacturer is offering. Therefore, it is best to read it over and talk it over with your Flooring Consultant for clarification.
Style of Carpet –
The most common residential carpet styles include Saxony, Berber, frieze, and cut-and-loop. Each carpet style is available in various qualities, yet some styles are better for high-traffic areas than others.
As you can see, there are quite a few factors to consider when shopping for carpet. It can be confusing and overwhelming.
